Winmate 42-inch All-In-One Signage Display
An interesting, space-saving, modular signage solution based on the Intel Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) (by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Now for something different. At RuggedPCReview.com we often examine interesting rugged solutions that use embedded systems technology to bring computing into areas where it simply wasn't possible or feasible before. That includes a variety of rugged industrial PCs, box PCs, as well as customized solutions based on embedded systems technology, using easily replaceable and upgradeable computer modules that come in a variety of standards.
But it doesn't stop there. Last Fall, Intel and some partners announced OPS—Open Pluggable Specification—to help standardize the design and development of digital signage solutions, that new breed of large digital displays that provide information and guidance in public places.
What's the reasoning for OPS? To make it possible for digital signage manufacturers to "deploy interchangeable systems faster and in higher volumes, while lowering costs for development and implementation." The Intel news release on the Open Pluggable Specification is here, and access to the specification can be gained by registering with Intel here.
One of the first actual solutions using OPS is Winmate's All-In-One Signage Display that combines a 42-inch flatscreen monitor with a pluggable computing module that acts as a digital signage player. All connectors and signals are standardized to the Open Pluggable Specification, resulting in a solution that is not only easy to install and maintain, but also saves space and cost.
The way it works is this: Winmate created a 42-inch flatscreen display with 1920 x 1080 1080p resolution that can accommodate a slender OPS-compliant computing module on its backside. The module (see right), which is only 1.2 inches thick, simply slides into the back of the display and connects to the displays electronics via OPS connectors. And despite its slender size, the OPS module packs a punch with an Intel Core i5-520E processor and the Intel Mobile 5 Series Express Chipset (QM57). This is a high-end, powerful solution easily capable of running demanding signage and multimedia applications. The picture to the left shows the relative size of the display and the module, and how it fits into the display. The rugged aluminum display itself can be mounted almost anywhere with VESA-standard mounting hardware.
Winmate gears their innovative W42IQWB-OML2/OPS digital signage solution towards applications in restaurants, retail, transportation, hotels, museums, galleries, trade shows and more. Running Windows Embedded Standard 7, the system is more than powerful and flexible enough for any imaginable signage projects. The display is both large (42 inches) and bright (500 nits) enough to really be seen, and should anything ever go wrong, the setup is extremely easy to service: simply remove the module and repair/replace it. And since the system is OPS standards based, if new computing modules become available, upgrading is a simple matter of replacing the module.
