Janam HT1

Tough, rugged and highly customizable 8-inch Android enterprise tablet.
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

On January 13, 2020, New York-based rugged mobile computing vendor Janam announced the Android 9 "Pie" based 8-inch Janam HT1 tablet computer. Designed to improve line of business applications including put-away and replenishment, cross docking, shipping and receiving, inventory management, merchandising and clienteling, the new HT1 combines appealing design, military-grade ruggedness and state-of-the-art technology.

While Janam is primarily known for its growing roster of enterprise handhelds, the company has been testing the tablet waters before. In 2014, Janam's XT1 5.9-inch explored the space between small tablets and the emerging class of ever larger smartphones. The HT1, however, is Janam's first foray into the true tablet space. It's 8-inch display is bigger than any smartphone (as of early 2020, smartphones maxed out at 6.5 inches) and the HT1 clearly sports a tablet design.

Take one look at the backside of the HT1 you there's no doubt that this is a serious tool for the job. There's the big, removable and hot-swappable battery. There are expansion pins for bolt-on modules. It has a 9.25 x 5.75 inch footprint that provides substantial bezel protection and makes the HT1 easy to hold and operate. Yet, the Janam HT1 is remarkably slender for a rugged tablet, just 0.7 inches.

So what we have here is a very intelligently designed device that offers substantial ruggedness, full tablet functionality, and exemplary ease of operation without the bulk, weight and cost of a traditional old-style rugged tablet.

Hardware

In terms of hardware, the Android 9 "Pie"-based based Janam HT1 display measures 8.0 inches diagonally, uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection, and offers full HD 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. That translates into 283 ppi, which is more than any of the currently available Apple iPad Pro tablets.

There's capacitive multi-touch, and the device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon SD625 CPU. That's the Systen-on-Chip, codenamed MSM8953, used in many leading smartphones as well as some rugged tablets. The chip is based on the ARMv8-A 64-bit instruction set, and the Cortex-A53 is the successor to the popular Cortex-A7. For graphics, the SD625 includes an Adreno 506 GPU running at up to 650MHz. There's 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard eMMC Flash storage, which can be complemented via microSDXC card.

Wired connectivity includes a reversible USB Type-C jack, a 14-pin surface-mount Pogo connector for use with expansion modules such as Janam's optional 2D imager, and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. On the wireless side, there's Bluetooth 4.1, fast dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS/GLONASS positioning, and 4G LTE mobile broadband.

The HT1 has dual cameras. The rear-facing 13 megapixel camera has a user-controllable flash and is for documentation and related tasks. The user-facing 5 megapixel cam is for video calls.

Ruggedness

Designed for use in a variety of potentially demanding environments, the Janam HT1 carries IP67 sealing where the "6" means the computer is totally protected from dust, and the "7" that it is fully submersible to half a meter for 30 minutes. It can handle a wide operating temperature range from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, 4-foot drops, and has also been tested according to MIL-STD-810G procedures for shock and vibration.

The Janam HT1

In Janam's press release, company CEO Harry Lerner stated that "Janam's HT1 rugged tablet underscores our commitment to delivering breakthrough products that are better and more affordable than anything else out there." Adding the HT1 to the company lineup also extends Janam's potential market to all those business/enterprise customers who've been asking for a bigger display.

There's clearly much to like about the new Janam HT1. Almost everyone is familiar with Android, and Android version 9 "Pie" is state-of-the-art. The big sharp 8-inch screen really lets Android spread its wings, the big hot-swappable battery eliminates "range anxiety," the robust USB Type-C port adds functionality, and we like the physical buttons as well as the two programmable buttons. As part of Google's "Android Enterprise Recommended" (AER) program, Janam's HT1 completed stringent testing and is guaranteed to meet demanding enterprise-level requirements.

Customers will also like the HT1's ease of use and handling, the industrial-grade data capture with the bolt-on module, and the excellent cameras. -- Conrad H. Blickenstorfer, January 2020
