Dell's 2019 rugged notebooks

Late 2018, Dell introduced powerful successors to both its semi-rugged and fully rugged 14-inch laptops. The new machines are the Latitude 5420 and 5424 Rugged on the semi-rugged side, and the Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme at the fully rugged end. For a detailed review of the lineup, see here.

Dell Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme

The Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme is a direct replacement of the Dell Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme, which had served as Dell's primary fully rugged laptop offering since its introduction in the Fall of 2014. The new machine is the same size as the old. Starting at 7.6 pounds, it weighs almost a pound less, thanks to the smaller standard battery and more weight-saving design. Available with 6th gen "Skylake" chip (for those who still want Windows 7), a 7th generation Core i3, and very powerful 8th generation i5 and i7 quad-core processors, the Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme has been independently tested to MIL-STD-810G, IP-65, MIL-STD-461F and UL1604 standards.

Dell Latitude 5424 Rugged

The Latitude 5424 Rugged is a direct replacement of the Dell Latitude 14 Rugged, which had served as Dell's primary semi-rugged laptop offering since its introduction in the Fall of 2014. The new machine is the same size as the old but, starting at 5.5 pounds, weighs almost a pound less, thanks to the smaller standard battery and more weight-saving design.

Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged

The Latitude 5420 Rugged is a slenderized version of the Latitude 5424 Rugged that weighs less, too. The 5420 starts at 4.9 pounds and it's almost half an inch thinner than the 5424 (1.3 vs 1.73 inches). To make that possible, Dell had to cut the media bay (so no optical drive) and some other goodies (no second and third drives, no PC Card and ExpressCard slot options).

Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme

When your tough work environment requires both a notebook and a tablet computer, the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme convertible notebook offers the best of both worlds in a ultra-rugged design with a unique flip-hinge. The machine presents strong Intel Haswell performance and reliable data protection in a design that's built to withstand the most challenging environments. Rugged technologies such as aluminum alloy chassis material, IP65 ingress protection and sophisticated thermal management offer protection against accidental drops, water, dust, and extreme temperatures and help make the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme suitable for virtually any working environment.

Dell Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet

Building on the performance and features of their their existing Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme convertible notebook, Dell created the Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet. In essence, Dell condensed the guts of their convertible into a pure tablet form factor, retaining the same 11.6-inch display size and much of the functionality, but paring 40% of the weight and updating underlying technologies in the process. Offering capacitive multi-touch, the Latiude 12 Rugged Tablet is also "glove-capable," which is important as field work often requires the wearing of gloves and it's impractical to take them off every time the tablet is used.

Dell releases updated rugged tablet: state-of-the-art, lighter, sharper, more secure, and much faster
Talk about timing. A mere couple of weeks after we published our long term review of Dell's original Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet, Dell released its successor, the Latitude Rugged Extreme Tablet. The new model is much more powerful than the original and yet can last considerably longer between charges thanks to higher capacity batteries. Its considerably sharper display will be well received, as will be the addition of a USB Type C port, and the noticeably lighter weight. The new kickstand makes the tablet an even better 2-in-1 solution.
