Janam XT100
Small, handy and light, this powerful 4.3-inch Android touch computer combines the best of personal and business handheld technologies and features. (by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Janam is a New York-based rugged mobile computing vendor with worldwide distribution. The company was established in early 2006 as a provider of purpose-built rugged handheld computing devices for mobile workers.
The XT Series of rugged touch computers computers was initially introduced in 2014 with the Janam XT1 mini tablet to answer the need for devices that combine smartphone technologies with industrial-grade components and enterprise-class versatility. The smaller XT2 followed in 2016, and in February 2018, the company introduced the Janam XT100, smaller yet and designed to deliver the best of both personal and business mobile computing technology.
Those familiar with Janam's lineup will find in the new XT100 a smaller, thinner, and lighter version of the company's 5-inch higher-end XT2. While smartphone and handheld computer screens have grown larger and larger over the past several years, bigger is not always better. Sometimes a smaller screen is large enough, and it's more important to have a device that handily fits into any pocket.
Smaller doesn't mean less powerful or lacking features. Like all of Janam's rugged handhelds, this one is built to bring professional durability and features to the workplace. And that includes an industrial-grade integrated Honeywell scanner. Below you can see what the Janam XT100 looks like from all sides.
How small is the XT100? It has a footprint of 2.8 x 5.35 inches, roughly like an iPhone 8. With the big rechargeable battery and the dedicated scanner and all the extra ruggedness, the XT100 is thicker than a slender consumer phone — 0.7 inches — and it's heavier, too, but not by much. At 7.5 ounces it weighs just a fraction of an ounce more than the brittle, unprotected iPhone 8 Plus.
Hardware
In terms of hardware, the Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow"-based based XT100 display measures 4.3 inches diagonally, uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection, and offers 480 x 800 pixel WVGA resolution. That translates into 217 ppi, not as much as premium consumer smartphones, but plenty sharp enough.
There's capacitive multi-touch, and the whole thing is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor, the same that does duty in Janam's larger XT2. There's 16GB of onboard storage, which can be complemented via microSD card.
Wired connectivity includes a micro-USB jack, surface-mount contacts for use with an optional dock, and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. On the wireless side, there's Class 1 (that's the powerful kind that can reach over 300 feet) Bluetooth 4.1, quick dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n, and also 4GLTE mobile broadband.
For data collection, there's the aforementioned industrial-grade scanner, a N6603 Series 1D/2D imager from Honeywell. Also available is RFID/NFC. Cameras are powerful, too. 13 megapixel and user-controllable flash for documentation, 2 megapixel for user-facing applications.
Ruggedness
On the ruggedness front, the new XT100 can survive multiple four-foot drops onto concrete, carries IP65 sealing, and can handle a very wide operating temperature range from -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. That means it's fully dustproof, can handle immersion in water, and can be operated just about anywhere, including freezers. A simple, soft clear plastic boot adds even more protection (see picture in sidebar).
The Janam XT100
In Janam's press release, Harry B Lerner, CEO, Janam Technologies, stated, "Whether it's for a startup, mom-and-pop shop or multinational company, Janam is committed to providing the right features at the right price to businesses of all sizes".
We agree; with the XT100, Janam addresses the need of numerous business and enterprise operations who wish to standardize on a small, light handheld computer that works just like the smartphones most staff is already familiar with (so no extra training), but one that's much tougher and more durable than any consumer device, and comes with professional-grade data collection capabilities.
