DT Research DT340T

High performance 14-inch rugged tablet for demanding mobile and in-vehicle operation
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The primary purpose of tablets is to bring everything you can do on a smartphone to a bigger screen, and do so while still being reasonably light and handy. That's why most tablets have screens in the 10-inch range. But what if you need a bigger screen and more power? That's what DT Research made their big, high-performance 14-inch DT340T tablet for.

Initially introduced April 2018 for the specific needs of law enforcement officers and first responders, the powerful DT340T's big display and available discrete graphics card also make possible, away from the office, interactive 3D training and operations for aerospace, firefighting, military, medical, manufacturing and other disciplines that require highly detailed simulation processing.

The picture compilation above shows that the handsomely styled DT340T offers the kind of onboard connectivity usually only found on big laptops. Three full-size USB ports, an RJ45 LAN jack, a standard-size HDMI port, as well as a full-size Smart/CAC Card reader slot.

And here are some of the DT340T's big league features:

  • The 14-inch capacitive multi-touch screen is as big as that of a standard laptop; working with multiple windows doesn't feel crowded as it does on a small screen. With a luminance of 1,000 nits the DTR340T screen is fully outdoor-viewable. The optional NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 addresses the needs of those running complex mapping and visual systems. And there's even an optional active pen for precision on-screen operations.

  • The DT340T provides high-end laptop performance. Users have their choice of two Intel 8th generation processors, the Core i5-8250U and the Core i7-8650U. Both are powerful quad core designs with eight threads. The i5-8250U is standard, with the optional i7-8650U offering more SmartCache, slightly quicker graphics, perhaps 20% quicker processing, as well as Intel vPro and a few other Intel technologies.

  • To eliminate "battery power anxiety" DT Research gave the DT340T massive, almost unheard of, onboard battery capacity. The tablet has two battery compartments, each accommodating either a standard 62 watt-hour battery or an extended 91 watt-hour battery. That makes for 124 or 182 watt-hours, more than any major full-size rugged laptop! This means the DT340T can potentially make it through not just one but several full shifts without any recharging at all.

  • Since the DT340T will be used in all sorts of settings, DT Research designed it for optimal in-vehicle use with a cradle mount that includes a security lock, a quick-release, and a detachable keyboard. And get this: there's an available dual cup holder extension that folds out from the bottom of the unit. Yes, my friends, DT Research made that possible. Folks initially snickered when Americans wanted cupholders in their cars. Today, they are a can't-do-without feature.

More is more with the DT340T, and it's all good. That means a footprint of 13.8 x 9.6 inches, some 40% more than the fragile 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and the tablet weighs a hefty 6.4 pounds. But it's less than 1.2 inches thick, remarkably svelte for such a powerhouse.

On the ruggedness side, the DT340T carries an IP65 ingress protection rating, which means it's fully dust-proof and can handle low-pressure water jets from all directions. The standard operating temperature range is a huge -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Shock and vibration testing were performed to MIL-STD-810G procedures.

Overall, the DT340T from DT Research is the Godzilla of rugged tablets, big and brutally powerful, but far sleeker, much better looking, and infinitely more high-tech. Those who need serious computing firepower wherever they may go (or drive, or fly) will love it. -- Conrad Blickenstorfer, February 2019
