The Psion Teklogix 8580 is for vehicle-mount and warehouse/shopfloor applications that require a rugged, Windows-based computer with a large touch screen display and a separate keyboard. With a footprint of 11.75 x 11.5 inches and weighing about nine pounds, this is a sizeable device with a display that is large enough (10.4 inches diagonally) for easy viewing and operation. The 8580 can be mounted with a variety of standard VESA mounts, such as those available from RAM Mounts.
Unlike the Psion Teklogix 8515/25/30 models that run Windows CE, the 8580 and the slightly larger 8590 run either Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Embedded. The systems are available in different configurations, with 800MHz and 1GHz versions of the Intel Celeron M and either a hard disk or Flash. The hardware choice is usually driven by the choice of operating system. Windows XP, as a general purpose OS, is larger and has larger resource requirements and thus needs all the processing power and hard disk spce it can get. Windows XP Embedded implementations are leaner and more targeted, and offer excellent performance even with modest hardware. XPe systems are often run off Flash, thus eliminating the hard disk altogether.
The 8580 has a 10.4-inch touch screen with 800 x 600 pixel SVGA resolution, enough for many vertical market/custom applications. The display has a strong 400 nits CCFL backlight and enhanced anti-glare treatment for optimal viewing indoors and out.
Depending on its intended use, the Psion Teklogix 8580 can be ordered with four, then or 25 keys/buttons on its front. This allows for complete customization as the keys can be assigned according to application. If need be, users can, of course, add an external keyboard.
For connectivity, the 8580 has two standard DB9 RS232 serial ports, two USB 2.0 ports, an RJ45 LAN jack and a legacy PS/2 port for keyboard or mouse. If wireless LAN is needed, it can be implemented via a 802.11b/g PCIe MiniCard.
In vehicle-mounted applications, the Psion Teklogix 8580 uses vehicle power. If mounted in a shopfloor or warehouse setting, it uses AC/DC power.
The Psion Teklogix 8580 is a rugged platform with IP66/IP67 sealing and a wide -4 to 122 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range. A special freezer option is available with an extended temperature range down to -22F. It has also been tested for shock and vibration, humidity, and so on, and carries the requisite agency approvals.
