Amrel MRK8

Ruggedized notebook computer for medical markets
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

Based in El Monte, California, AMREL (AMerican RELiance) has a long history of offering value-added applications in vertical markets. The "Rocky" line of ruggedized notebook computers was introduced in 1995 and has been updated, enhanced, and fine-tuned every since. AMREL was among the first to offer the full power, expansion, and convenience of a standard notebook in a ruggedized package.

AMREL uses a base notebook platform that is then customized and specialized for different markets. The MRK8 is part of AMREL's Medical Computer Division lineup of rugged and compact medical computer and medical electronic solutions designed in accordance with the IEC 60601 standard.

The medical market AMREL MRK8 notebook computer uses the same magnesium housing as the rugged military market RK7-M notebook. It has a 15.1 inch display with anti-reflective coating and is based on state-of-the-art technology, including an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and an optionally available SXGA+ (1400 x 1050 pixel) display and dedicated 128 or 256MB Nvidia MXMII video chipset for applications requiring high resolution. The battery has been beefed up to 73 watt-hours.

Of special interest for medical markets is the MRK8's ability to accommodate 3rd party technology for special medical systems solutions. These Data Aquisition, or "DAQ," cards slide into the optical drive bay on the right side of the notebook and take advantage of the MRK8's internal mini PCI and mini PCI express interfaces.

Like all of AMREL's notebook variants, the Vista-compatible MKR8 is a rugged piece of equipment that can handle all sorts of environmental conditions. It is sealed to IP55 specifications, certified according to MIL-STD 810F specs, and it can be ordered in a version that passes MIL-STD 461E standards for electromagnetic emissions shielding. The keyboard is fully sealed, of course, and the large variety of onboard ports and jacks all have individual rubber plugs.

The MRK8's magnesium housing is finished in white, indicating its intended use in medical and clinical settings.
