Unitech EA602
Competitively priced rugged Android-based handheld computer with integrated industrial-grade scanning
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Unitech announced the EA602 in June 2018 as a "a seamless collaboration of design, functionality, and competitive pricing" — in essence an "economy" level handheld computer that still includes up-to-date technology and industrial scanning capabilities. Primary application is that of a data collection and communication tool for areas such as retail, hospitality, transportation, logistics, and field service.
Competent technology
On the hardware side, the EA602 has little to hide. There's an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 MSM8937 ARM A53 processing unit running at up to 1.4GHz that also includes an Adreno 505 GPU. This chip is also found in a variety of Huawei, LG, Xiamoi, Lenovo, Motorola and Asus products. There's 2GB of RAM and 16GB of Flash storage that can be augmented by up to 32GB via a microSD Card slot. The standard battery provides 14.4 watt-hours. Default battery life is listed as 10-12 hours. The battery appears to be externally accessible and replaceable.
The Unitech EA602 comes with a suitably sized 5.0-inch LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. That's 294 pixels per inch and makes for a sharp-enough picture, as sharp as most contremporary consumer phones. The EA602 also has a 2-megapixel front camera for conferencing, and a rear 8-megapixel autofocus camera with flash for documentation.
The EA602 uses capacitive multi-touch that's also works with gloves and when it's wet. Below the display are the standard three Android buttons: Back, Home, and Tasks, implemented as capacitive touch. There are scan buttons on each side of the device, a volume rocker on the left, and also a programmable key.
The EA602 is based on Android 7.1 "Nougat." As of July 2018, according to Android Developers version 7 of Android is used in almost a third of all Android devices. Note that the EA602 does not come with GMS, the Google Mobile Services that includes Chrome, Youtube, the Google Play store and more. That's on purpose; this is a device for work, not play and entertainment.
Powerful data collection capabilities
Like most of Unitech's handhelds, the EA602 is designed to meet the needs of a large variety of data collection tasks. Its HF/NFC RFID reader/writer supports ISO 14443 Type A and B, and its integrated 1D/2D imager lets the EA602 handle all major barcodes and 2D codes. On the wireless communication side, there's dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, as well 2G/3G/4G LTE TDD/FDD WWAN for wide area cellular voice and data connections.
While many enterprise handhelds with integrated industrial-grade scanning are on the big and bulky side, the EA602 is quite compact with a 3.1 x 6.0 inch foot print (about like an iPhone 8 Plus), a very manageable thickness of 0.6 inches and weighing just 10 ounces. The frontal design follows contemporary smartphone standards with flush frontal glass, and a rectangular shape with rounded corners. Heftier and slightly raised perimeter protection identifies the EA602 as a device that's much tougher than any consumer phone.
As far as ruggedness goes, the Unitech EA602 delivers. There's a five foot drop spec, a fairly wide 14 to 122 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range, and IP65 sealing where the "6" means the device is fully dustproof, and the "5" that it can handle low pressure water jets from all directions. There's presumably a slew of other tests and certifications, and it'd be good to have those listed in the company specs as well.
Bottomline
The Unitech EA602 is a solution for an era where almost everyone is thoroughly familiar with their smartphone, and most of the world's smartphones use the Android OS. So it makes sense to make available a handheld computer that looks and works about the same as a standard smartphone, with the exception that it is a lot more durable and can handle routine work-related tasks, such as scanning and other data capture.
Since this is Unitech's "competitively priced" offering, specs are a bit less than on some of the company's higher end models. At US$975 it's still up there with premium consumer smartphones, but that's more than fair considering its toughness and industrial data collection capabilities. Conrad H. Blickenstorfer, July 2018
