Unitech EA500

Aggressively priced, light and handy Android-based handheld computer
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

"Data collection technology changes at a fast pace," said Brian Silence, Director of Business Development at Unitech, and that's why the company announced the EA500 August 2018 as a device "designed to stay on trend and within budget." What does "budget" mean in this context? An MSRP of US$800 for a rugged Android handheld with 1D/2D barcode reading ability. Targeting a variety of applications within the retail, transportation, logistics, and field service industries, Unitech counts on not only price, but also a pleasing consumer smartphone look to attract customers.

Competent technology

On the hardware side, the EA50 is decently equipped. There's an quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 MSM8917 ARM A53 processing unit running at up to 1.4GHz that also includes an Adreno 308 GPU. This chip is also found in a variety of devices from Samsung, LG, Xiamoi, Motorola and Nokia. There's 2GB of RAM and 16GB of Flash storage that can be augmented by up to 32GB via a microSD Card slot. The standard battery provides 14.4 watt-hours. Default battery life is listed as 10-12 hours. The battery appears to be externally accessible and replaceable.

The Unitech EA500 comes with a suitably sized 5.0-inch LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. That's 294 pixels per inch and makes for a sharp-enough picture, as sharp as most contremporary consumer phones. The EA500 also has a 2-megapixel front camera for conferencing, and a rear 8-megapixel autofocus camera with flash for documentation. And there is a USB Type-C connector for charging and data communication. Compared to micro-USB, USB Type-C is quicker, more reliable, and you plugging it in isn't trial and error, as Type-C is reversible.

The EA500 uses capacitive multi-touch that's also works with gloves and when it's wet. Below the display are the standard three Android buttons: Back, Home, and Tasks. There are scan buttons on each side of the device, a volume rocker on the left, and also a programmable key.

The EA500 is based on Android 7.1 "Nougat." As of August 2018, according to Android Developers version 7 of Android is used in almost a third of all Android devices. According to its user manual, the EA500 does not come with Android GMS. GMS stands for Google Mobile Services and includes Chrome, Youtube, the Google Play store and more. Unitech cites enhanced security as the reason to omit GMS.

Powerful data collection capabilities

Like most of Unitech's handhelds, the EA500 seeks to meet the needs of a large variety of data collection applications. Its NFC RFID reader/writer supports ISO 14443 Type A and B, and the EA500 can handle all major barcodes and 2D codes. On the wireless communication side, there's dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, as well 2G/3G/4G LTE TDD/FDD WWAN for wide area cellular voice and data connections.

While many enterprise handhelds with integrated industrial-grade scanning are on the big and bulky side, the EA500 is remarkably compact with a 3.0 x 6.2 inch foot print (almost exactly like an iPhone 8 Plus), a very manageable half-inch thickness and weighing only 7.4 ounces (by comparison, the non-rugged iPhone 8 Plus weighs 7.13 ounces). The frontal design follows contemporary smartphone standards with flush frontal glass, and a rectangular shape with rounded corners. Heftier and slightly raised perimeter protection identifies the EA500 as a device that's much tougher than any consumer phone.

As far as ruggedness goes, the Unitech EA500 delivers. There's a five foot drop spec, a fairly wide 14 to 122 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range, and IP67 sealing where the "6" means the device is fully dustproof, and the "7" that it can handle full immersion down to a meter. There's presumably a slew of other tests and certifications, and it'd be good to have those listed in the company specs as well.

Bottomline

The Unitech EA500, just like the company's recently introduced EA602, is a solution for an era where almost everyone is thoroughly familiar with their smartphone, and most of the world's smartphones use the Android OS. So it makes sense to make available a handheld computer that looks and works about the same as a standard smartphone, with the exception that it is a lot more durable and can handle routine work-related tasks, such as scanning and other data capture.

What's not quite clear is the relationship between the EA500 and the EA602. The EA500 lists for US$175 less for a handheld with the same screen size and mostly the same features, one that weighs less, is IP67 sealed (the EA602 is IP65), and comes with the preferable USB Type-C. The primary difference seems to be that the EA602 has a discrete integrated scanner whereas the EA500 uses its cameras for barcode reading. Conrad H. Blickenstorfer, August 2018
