Quantum3D Thermite TVC2.0 3500/3520
2.5 lbs. rugged Tactical Visual Computer for vehicle applications
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)
Quantum3D, located in San Jose, Calif., specializes in open-architecture, realtime computing solutions for industry-specific applications. They do that by packaging industry-standard components with their own image generator technologies, software, and services. Their Thermite TVC (TVC stands for "Tactical Visual Computing") product line includes a variety of fanless, ruggedized, sealed, mil-spec COTS computers that support advanced 2D/3D, I/O, video capture capabilities, and can run either Windows XP or a variety of Linux distros.
The Thermite TVC2 (shown above) measures a very compact 6.8 x 4.5 x 2.5 inches and weighs about 2.5 pounds. It's designed for vehicle applications and runs on 28 Volt vehicle power (10.5 to 30 Volts works).
The TVC2 was designed as a tactical visual computer that allows rapid migration of PC-based applications from desktop environments to field-ready deployments in tanks, HMMWVs, Bradley fighting Vehicles, aircraft, maritime and other vehicles. Emphasis is on 2D/3D graphics, accelerated video
capture for sensor or camera input, and video-intensive C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) as well as field-based training, mission planning, mission rehearsal, weapon system control, maintenance, and other augmented reality simulations.
The primary difference between the 3500 and 3520 models is that the 3520 has a Mil-STD-1553 A/B dual redundant port and RS422 port that replaces the 3500's Firewire port and one of its USBs.
Below is a matrix that shows Quantum3D's Thermite models and where they fit in in terms of size and performance.
