Datalogic Pegaso

Rugged industrial PDA with high res display
(by Conrad H. Blickenstorfer)

The RoHS-compliant Datalogic Mobile Pegaso is a compact industrial PDA designed for mobile data capture in a wide range of applications that require ruggedness and integrated communications capabilities. The device is targeted at retail-in-store, field force automation and logistics applications and is also suitable for inventory management, office applications, healthcare or manufacturing.

The Pegaso initially ran the Windows CE 5.0 operating environment on a 520 MHz XScale PXA 270 processor and Windows Mobile 6.0 became available in May of 2008. It can withstand drops from up to 5 feet to concrete and is sealed to IP64 specifications. There is 64 or 128 MB of RAM for added program memory and 128 MB of Flash memory for additional non-volatile storage. A user accessible SDIO port allows expandability for additional memory or peripherals.

Datalogic made sure to provide proper ergonomics and the Pegaso is comfortable to hold for small and large hands. The backlit 19-key keypad allows for rapid data entry. The large 3.7-inch diagonal touchscreen offers full 480 x 640 VGA resolution, and the transflective screen provides excellent readability in indoor and outdoor environments. The large screen size and high resolution mean it's possible to run multimedia applications for sales assistance or training, and to run applications that require more than the QVGA resolution typically found in Pocket PCs.

Datalogic also designed the Pegaso so that its housing can accommodate either a standard or an extended battery without an extra bulge. The battery pack can quickly be replaced, and the optional dock has a charging slot for a second battery right in the front for easy access.

For connectivity, the Pegaso offers USB and serial ports, as well as an integrated Bluetooth module for wireless connections to a variety of peripherals. There's also 802.11b/g WiFi and in May of 2008, Datalogic announced the availability of optional E-GPRS (GSM/GPRS/EDGE),

A center-mounted integrated Class II laser scanner with a depth of field between two inches and three feet can read most common bard code formats. A magnetic stripe reader is optional. A quick-attach pistol grip handle is available as is a 4-battery charger.
